How to Pick Out a Metal Detector

What metal detector you choose to buy should be based on a few different factors. For example, what will you be searching for, where will you be searching, and which one is the most comfortable one for you? These are certainly the most important things to take into consideration.

If you are a beginner, then it is probably a good idea to buy a durable metal detector (preferably one that will last for a long time). However, you won’t want one that is overly complicated (and you certainly don’t NEED one that is overly complicated, either). You would be wise to look into the lighter weight, mid-range metal detectors; these are ideal for those who are new to metal detecting.

Also, you will want to take into considering the type of terrain that you will be using the metal detector in; this is very important, since many metal detectors are actually optimized for particular types of soil. This will affect how well the metal detector can weed out the garbage items, among other things.

If you are looking mainly for the more common treasures, such as old coins, gold rings, pocket knives, etc., then you can go with a regular metal detector. However, if you want to hunt for gold nuggets specifically, then you may want to go with a gold detector, which is basically just a lower frequency metal detector (but keep in mind that gold detectors can cost a bit more than regular metal detectors). As far as what brand to go with, you can’t really go wrong with Whites, Minelab, and Garrett metal detectors; those are all excellent choices.
