What is the Best Value Metal Detector?

Hand held metal detectors can range anywhere from about $45 to $450 or more. So which one is the best bang for the buck? Unfortunately that isn’t exactly an easy question to answer, since it all depends on your personal preference, and what kind of treasure you will be searching for with it.

For starters, are you going to just be looking for common treasures such as old coins, gold rings, and pocket knives etc.? If so, you probably won’t have to spend a small fortune on a metal detector that can detect objects that are buried 3 feet under ground (especially since most of the valuable treasures are much closer to the surface than that).

Generally the more advanced the metal detector, the more it will cost. One option for finding metal detectors fairly cheap is eBay.com, or even Craigslist.org (although you won’t find many brand new metal detectors on Craigslist). But again, most people don’t need a metal detector with all the bells and whistles, since most of the valuable treasures found by metal detectors aren’t even buried very deep within the ground, and in some cases they aren’t even buried at all.

As for what brands of metal detectors are the most popular (and considered to be the best value for the price), only a few seem to stand out among the rest. Basically the 4 top brands of metal detectors are: Minelab, Whites, Bounty Hunter, and Garrett metal detectors. Just remember that you don’t need the most expensive model; it is far more important to find one that is simply comfortable to hold onto (and use) for long periods of time.
